Text reads: ABC Gives Hope. A rainbow on a red background with the ABC Radio logo.

Right now, there are 270,000 South Australian households who are going hungry. And many of them are families just like yours. ABC Radio is joining with Foodbank in the ABC Gives appeal to help put food on the table of those in need in our community.

The price of essentials like food, housing, power and fuel has climbed so much in the last year that people who were already struggling are now susceptible to sudden bill shock and financial disadvantage.

The current economic climate has meant demand has increased alarmingly: More than 35% of South Australian households struggled to put food on the table last year.

Give hope to your community and donate now.

Why you should help

The cost of living crisis has put additional pressure on already struggling households, many who are experiencing hunger for the first time:

  • Mortgage holders make up 31% of all food insecure households; skipping meals or going entire days without eating, simply to pay the bills
  • More than 60% of all food insecure households in South Australia have someone in paid work

Foodbank needs your help to ensure no one goes without.

Help end hunger this Christmas by participating in ABC Gives.

Nobody asks to be in this situation. Your support of Foodbank is a lifesaver. It helps me be a mum that can provide for her children. Thank you for being there for families in need.

FAQs

What is Foodbank?

Foodbank is the largest hunger relief charity in Australia, providing food and groceries to charities and school breakfast programs in every state and territory. They’re here for the everyday Australians who are going without.

Why has the ABC chosen this charity at this time?
As cost-of-living pressures mount, and with more pressure than ever on charities, the ABC engaged in a robust process to ensure our ABC Gives activity can make the biggest possible impact for Australians in need.

Why does Foodbank need your help?

Every little bit counts as Foodbank needs truckloads of meals to support every person who needs our help. That’s people in your suburb, in your community and in our schools. People who never needed help before the cost-of-living crisis hit are now struggling to feed themselves and their families. We couldn’t do what we do without you and your kindness.

Can I still donate canned goods to ABC Gives like previous years?

This year, we are encouraging people to donate funds, rather than canned foods, so we can make a greater impact for hungry South Australians.

Foodbank accepts donations of all kinds of food and groceries from farmers, manufacturers and retailers throughout Australia. We also partner with food companies who donate ingredients and services so we can produce essential items like breakfast cereals, pasta, sauce and tinned fruit and vegetables.

Are my donations tax deductible?

Cash donations above $2 are tax deductible in Australia. You will receive a receipt from Foodbank by email.

How can I  make a donation?

Click the red 'Donate Now' button above to be taken to the donation portal on Foodbank's website. The ABC cannot accept donations, so you will need to donate directly to them.

Or you can donate over the phone, by calling Foodbank on (08) 8351 1136.

Does the ABC keep any of the money raised?

No. All money is donated directly to the charity partner.
