Right now, 1 in 5 Queensland households are going hungry. That's 400,000 Queensland households who are skipping meals or not eating for days to get by. Sadly, 1 in 4 Queensland households experiencing hunger have dependent children in the home.

ABC Radio is joining with Foodbank in the ABC Gives appeal to help put food on the table of those in need in our local community.

The rising costs of essentials such as food, housing, energy, and fuel have surged dramatically over the past year. As a result, those who were already facing financial difficulties are now forced to make painful choices between these basic necessities, placing them at an even greater financial disadvantage.

The current economic climate has meant demand has increased alarmingly.

“It’s a little bit stressful because you always want Christmas to be amazing for the kids. But, with all the costs going up, we’re just not sure what Christmas is going to look like this year.”

– Jade, struggling mum

The power of your support

Every $1 donated by you is 2 meals created. That's right, your donation buys the healthy food to make these meals and Foodbank delivers it — it's genuinely that simple.

Where your money goes

This year Foodbank Queensland provided over 13 million kilograms of food and groceries to Queenslanders experiencing food insecurity, working in collaboration with over 350 member organisations and nearly 400 school breakfast programs.

How you can practically help:

  • $65 provides essential pantry staples, like bread, pasta flour and milk for families.
  • $100 provides fresh fruit and vegetables to thousands of families who rely on Foodbank for relief when crisis strikes.
  • $250 provides the joy of fresh, nutritious meals to help a family of 5 to get back on their feet.

"It's been a real struggle, trying to keep up with the rising costs of everything. Last year we were going to the pantry once a fortnight, but this year it's once a week."

– Rebecca, Foodbank service user

FAQs

What is Foodbank?

Foodbank is the largest hunger relief charity in Australia, providing food and groceries to charities and school breakfast programs in every state and territory. They're here for the everyday Australians who are going without.

Why has the ABC chosen this charity at this time?

As cost-of-living pressures mount, and with more pressure than ever on charities, the ABC engaged in a robust process to ensure our ABC Gives activity can make the biggest possible impact for Australians in need.

Why does Foodbank need your help?

Every little bit counts as Foodbank needs truckloads of meals to support every person who needs our help. That's people in your suburb, in your community and in our schools. People who never needed help before the cost-of-living crisis hit are now struggling to feed themselves and their families.

Are my donations tax deductible?

Cash donations above $2 are tax deductible in Australia. You will receive a receipt from Foodbank by email.

How can I make a donation?
