Helicopter footage showed a significant amount of water shooting through fences and windows of homes as residents watched on.

In a statement on Friday afternoon, Sydney Water said technicians had been on site "assessing a leak on the main when it burst".

"Crews have isolated the main and repairs are underway," they said.

"Customer advocates are on site working with impacted customers and assessing the damage."

It is understood the water pressure has since dropped.

The ABC understands the pipeline connects to the nearby Woronora Dam, which supplies drinking water for the Sutherland Shire and North Wollongong area.

The NSW State Emergency Services said it was offering sandbags to affected residents.
