Police divers find body of man who jumped into Nepean River in Sydney's west to retrieve fishing rod

Police said the man had jumped into the water to retrieve his fishing rod.

A renewed search has located the body of a fisherman who vanished on Saturday after jumping off a cliff into the Nepean River in Sydney's west.

Emergency services were called to Nortons Basin at Mulgoa, about 20 kilometres south of Penrith, at about 11am on Saturday following reports a 68-year-old man was missing in the water.

The man had been with his partner and was fishing beforehand.

Police said the man had dropped his fishing rod in the water and had jumped in to retrieve it but failed to resurface.

His body was found just before 11am on Sunday by police divers.

On Saturday, multiple agencies joined search efforts, including local police officers, the State Emergency Services' (SES) swift-water rescue team, Fire and Rescue NSW crews and NSW Ambulance.

A PolAir crew was also called to help.

The search resumed early this morning after it was suspended about 5:30pm on Saturday.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
