Thank you for joining tonight's coverage of the 2024 ARIA Awards

By Liana Walker

What a great night we have had!

A huge congratulations to Royel Otis and Troye Sivan for cleaning up this year — and to all the amazing artists who scored an ARIA tonight.

Thank you again for joining us, we'll see you at the next awards show!

You can read more about tonight's ARIAs here:

Any surprises?

By Liana Walker

I'm personally surprised that Kylie didn't take home any wins tonight — it might explain her absence! And I won't harp on about this, but am still sad we won't have an ARIA-certified BRAT summer.

Al: I'm actually surprised how many of the undercards actually got the recognition they deserved eg. Dobby, Emily Wuramarra, Teen Jesus, Speed. Stoked for the first-time winners.

Who's next for the ARIA Hall of Fame?

By Al Newstead

Hey Al! Who else do you think should get added to the hall of fame?

- Music fan

Great question, but a curly one that's really put me on the spot!

I think Silverchair and Powderfinger are pretty glaring omissions. But maybe ARIA is waiting for them to get back together (like the rest of us).

I really think The Go-Betweens  and Vika & Linda Bull belong in there. Ditto, the late, great country music icon Joy McKean.

But if I had to go with just one - that really deserves the spotlight in terms of under-represented Australian music history - it would be pioneers No Fixed Address. And here's a handy article detailing why:

Why does the dude from Royel Otis hide his face?

By Al Newstead

In a word? Privacy.

Royel Otis guitarist Royel Maddell uses his long, grungy hair to obscure his face in all the band's press photos, music videos, and — as evidenced tonight — video acceptance speeches.

One member of Royel Otis looks away,

Early on, Maddell struggled with performance anxiety and would often get nauseous before getting on stage.

The guitarist then decided to keep his identity hidden from public view, leading to vocalist Otis Pavlovic being the face of the group.

Even as Royel Otis's profile grows — playing sold-out tours abroad and at home — Maddell continues to keep his follicles to the front, and it's become part of the band's aesthetic.

Missy Higgins and mates

By Al Newstead

The spotlight shines on G Flip, playing the opening drum part to Missy's iconic single Scar.

Gretta Ray and Angie McMahon are also here, augmenting Missy Higgins and her backing band as they trade lines in the verse.

Given the starry-eyed way these singer-songwriters spoke about Higgins earlier, it's a beautiful full-circle moment.

You can see the audience swaying and mouthing the words, too. They're only human. Higgins then throws it to the crowd, who keenly pick up the invitation to belt the chorus.

Oh, and they start a chant of "Missy! Missy!" as the broadcast ends. Hey, they're only human.

More fun Charli xcx facts?

By Al Newstead

Loving the blog 💖💖any more Charli XCX fun facts for us?

- Tj

Sure thing, TJ.

Well, Charli has been involved with the ARIA Awards as far back as 2014. But her most memorable turn? Her wardrobe malfunction while presenting the Best Pop Release via video in 2021. Whoopsie!

Sad we missed out on gifting Charli xcx an Australian-approved Brat milestone. She missed out on scoring Most Popular International Act, losing to Taylor Swift.

It's the fourth time Swift has won the category, having previously won in 2019 (for her album Lover), 2021 (Evermore) and 2023 (Midnights).

Missy Higgins brings the show to a classy close

By Al Newstead

The freshly minted ARIA Hall of Fame inductee closes the ceremony with a selection of her music.

She begins alone at stage - just guitar and that voice - playing The Second Act, the confessional title track from her latest, chart-topping album.

A string quartet joins the arrangement, giving Missy time to move to a grand piano and begin performing The Special Two. She's joined by Amy Shark, singing and playing acoustic guitar.

She's not the only guest...

Another big ARIAs night for Troye Sivan

By Al Newstead

The homegrown superstar won two major categories last year (Best Solo Artist, Song of the Year). Tonight, Troye Sivan walks away with three pointy trophies: Album of the Year, Best Pop Release, and Best Solo Artist (again).

Currently touring the country, in what is essentially a victory lap, Sivan has been one of Australia's most consistent pop exports for years.

He got his start as a teen personality on YouTube, and first hit the top five on the Billboard 200 at age 19, with his 2014 EP, TRXYE.

He scored his first ARIA wins in 2016, winning Song of the Year and Best Video for his single Youth, then nominated multiple times over the years before finally coming good again last year around his mega-hit Rush.

Chances are very good we'll see him back at the winners podium again in future.

'Go have a one-night stand'

By Liana Walker

Troye uses his acceptance speech to share an anecdote.

"I was going through a break-up and was really really depressed," he says.

"I meet a guy and have a one-night stand with him and have this incredible connection."

Troye describes how it made him realise how many people were in the world and  the different connections he could have

"I write this album about this random stranger I never saw again," Troye says.

"Until I was at a wine bar in Melbourne."

Troye says he told the guy the album was about him.

"He looked very confused, he said 'the craziest thing is, I'm going through a break-up and the album is getting me through a break-up'."

He finishes the speech with a piece of advice:

"Go have a one-night stand with someone, you'll never know what could happen."

Album inspired by lockdowns

By Liana Walker

Just as quickly as he walked off stage Troye Sivan is back accepting the final ARIA of the night.

"What the hell," he starts again.

"I don't have anything to say - I said it all before."

He tells the crowd the album was inspired by moments between lockdowns in Melbourne.

'I do not feel like a solo artist' Troye shouts out his team

By Liana Walker

This is a back-to-back Best Solo Artist win for Troye Sivan.

"What the hell," he starts.

He shouts out Missy Higgins, then everyone he made the album with.

"I do not feel like a solo artist, not even one tiny, tiny bit," he says.

"I have so many people around me, I can barely do anything on my own anymore."

He thanks the fans, his mum and dad and his management.

"The creative team we have at the moment is so, so, so stellar," he says.

"I'm just making stuff I am proud of with people I absolutely adore."
