Police have cordoned off a home in Mordialloc, in Melbourne's south-east, after discovering the bodies of a man and woman inside.
Officers say, at this stage, they are not searching for anyone else in relation to the incident.
Homicide squad detectives are leading the investigation.
The bodies of a man and woman were discovered at a home in Melbourne's south-east by a person who had gone over to check on them, police say.
The pair, who were known to each other, were found inside a house on James Street, Mordialloc, just before 11am on Thursday.
Inspector Scott Dwyer told reporters on Thursday afternoon that the circumstances surrounding the deaths were yet to be determined but at this stage, police were not looking for anyone else involved.
"Until such time as the post mortem is undertaken we’re unable to determine the exact circumstances," he said.
He said homicide squad detectives were leading the investigation.
Police were called to the home by someone who knew the deceased and went to the house after they didn't turn up to work.
"This is really a tragic incident and would have been really traumatic for the person who located the male and female inside," Inspector Dwyer said.
Police are in the process of contacting next of kin, he said.
Footage taken of the area on Thursday shows the house has been cordoned off and a significant deployment of police. The State Emergency Service (SES) also attended the scene.
Neighbour Jade Lindsay told media she heard a woman scream shortly before 11am.
"It was just like really distressing, blood curdling scream that just really scared me because it was so prolonged," she said.
"I just came downstairs, asked the neighbours if they'd heard it as well and then ran down the street and I spoke to one of the neighbours who had come out down the street."
Ms Lindsay said she saw a woman outside a house pacing back and forth, visibly distressed.
Anyone with information about the incident is urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
