As Donald Trump names more controversial figures to his second-term administration, Democrats are wondering how they lost to such an unorthodox figure. 

Did their image as a party of the progressive cultural elites contribute to their defeat? And do they show contempt for those voters, including religious Americans, who were once part of their base?
