A woman was murdered and her body lay inside inside a Melbourne brothel for two days until it was discovered, police allege.
The 62-year-old's body was found inside the 149 Rainbow Garden brothel on Cowper Street in Footscray by police just after 8pm on November 29.
Police allege she was murdered in the early hours of November 27 by 35-year-old Footscray man Michael James Chalmers.
Mr Chalmers was arrested on Wednesday afternoon and charged with murder.
Dressed in a white t-shirt, Mr Chalmers faced the Melbourne Magistrates' Court on Thursday for a brief filing hearing.
Details of the allegations against Mr Chalmers were not aired and he was not required to enter a plea.
Magistrate James Fitzgerald noted it was a case that included DNA and CCTV evidence.
The magistrate redacted the alleged victim's name from charge sheets, and police also opposed the information being made available to the media.
Mr Chalmers was remanded in custody until the case returns to court on April 24, 2025.
Vibrant floral bouquets and cards adorned the fence of the Footscray brothel on Thursday, as members of the community expressed their grief over the death of the 62-year-old.
"Rest, and rest well," one note read.
"We don't know your name, but we carry you with us all the same."
Another handwritten card, surrounded by candles, included the Robert Frost poem Nothing Gold Can Stay.
The property, located in an industrial area, remained locked on Thursday afternoon.
