Murder charge dropped in fatal Townsville stabbing case after Mental Health Court ruling
A man charged with the murder of his mother in Townsville two years ago has been discharged of criminal offences on mental health grounds.
The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was arrested in December 2022 when he allegedly stabbed his mother at a home in the suburb of Mundingburra.
He was aged 25 at the time.
The 44-year-old woman died at the scene.
Another man who was present at the address on the day also suffered stab wounds.
In the Townsville Magistrates Court on Friday, defence lawyer Mikaila Ward told Magistrate Cathy Wadley a Mental Health Court decision handed down in August found her client "was not sound of mind" at the time of the alleged murder.
Ms Ward said the Mental Health Court had ordered proceedings against him be discontinued.
During today's brief hearing the man was discharged of three charges — murder, serious assault and going armed as to cause fear — after prosecutors offered no evidence.
