It’s time to get crafty and make a festive wreath! Wreaths are fun because you can use all kinds of beautiful things from your garden to make them unique, and by using all native materials you can keep using this wreath for many years to come!
You can make them in any size—great for hanging on your door, using as a table decoration, or even giving as a gift. And remember, wreaths don’t have to be perfect!
What you’ll need:
- A grown-ups help! This project is a little involved.
- A circular base (buy a reusable one or twist vines together to make your own).
- Beautiful foliage that dries well—gum leaves are perfect! You could also use rosemary or bay leaves.
- Colourful or textural flowers—everlasting daisies dry well and come in lots of colours, or use Banksia flowers and seed pods.
- Extra decorations like gumnuts, seed pods, grasses, ribbons, or baubles—whatever you like!
- Wire to keep it all together.
- Snips and scissors to cut your foliage. Make sure a grown-up helps to use these.
How to make your wreath:
Step 1: Gather your materials
Find your wreath base and gather some lovely leaves and flowers from your garden.
Step 2: Build the base
Take your wire and attach it to your wreath base. Make little bunches of leaves and attach them tightly with the wire, working your way around.
Keep going until the whole base is covered. If you prefer, you can leave it green and simple—up to you!
Step 3: Add decorations
Now for the fun part—decorating! Space your decorations in odd numbers like 1, 3, 5, or 7 to make it look just right.
You can go for one larger group of decorations or spread out smaller ones all around.
For flowers like strawflowers, trim the stems and create a U-shape with wire to attach them.
You can also add some trailing pieces like fern for a bit of movement. Gumnuts are great for texture, and Rice flower adds a light, airy touch.
Step 4: Hang it up and enjoy!
Once you're happy with your wreath, make a small loop of wire at the top to hang it.
Step back, admire your work, and enjoy the festive cheer!
